== Introduction ==

[https://sonosaurus.com/sooperlooper/index.html SooperLooper] is a flexible live looping sampler with similar functionality to the venerable [https://loopers-delight.com/tools/echoplex/echoplex.html Gibson/Oberheim Echoplex Digital Pro (EDP)]. It is very configurable and feature rich. Zynthian integrates much of its functionality.

=== How to get started ===

SooperLooper is an audio effects processor which needs to be added to a chain. You will find it in the "Other" category of the audio effects. Many users add it to the main mixbus chain. Some add it to a dedicated group or effects return / mixbus chain and some insert into an individual audio or synth chain. Your choice depends on how you want to use it. If you want all zynthian sounds to be recorded into loops then the main mixbus may be the best option. If you want to select several, but not all chains to be recorded then a group or return / mixbus chain may be your choice. If you only want to record a single source, e.g. a microphone then you may want to insert into a single chain.

There are two default presets:

* default - Configures SooperLooper as a fairly standard, free-running audio looper.
* sync2clock - Configures SooperLooper to syncronise with the zynthian transport and clock.

=== Single Pedal Mode ===

You can drive SooperLooper with a single MIDI pedal. This is achieved by binding the pedal that sends a MIDI CC message to the "single pedal" controller that is found on the "Global loop" (6th) page of controls. Zynthian expects a non-zero CC value when the pedal is pressed and a zero value when released. The following actions are available:

* Press when idle, e.g. first press will start recording the loop.
* Press when recording will stop recording and start playing the loop.
* Press when playing will start overdubbing the loop.
* Double press whilst playing will pause the loop.
* Triple press will clear the loop.
* Double press and hold will clear the loop.
* Single press and hold will record or overdub until the pedal is released.

Zynthian has multiple methods to navigate its UI which allow for the three core user interface designs: V4, V5 & Touch-only. In general, short, bold and long press (or tap / click) will trigger an operation, like navigating to a view. The long press is usually associated with a global action that should occur everywhere whilst short and bold press are generally context specific. The global naviagition for each of the 4 encoders are:

1. Show admin menu
2. PANIC! All sounds off
3. Show snaphots menu
4. Show power off option

= V4 =

Core navigation is performed using the 4 encoders, labelled:

1. layer
2. back
3. learn / shot
4. select

Navigation is performed by short, bold or long pressing an encoder and using the ''select'' encoder to move the highlight cursor through lists. Where there is a 2D interface, e.g. grid, the ''learn / shot encoder'' is used for vertical navigation and the ''select'' encoder is used for horizontal navigation. The [[#Touch-only|touchscreen ]] may be used to assist with navigation if desired.

= V5 =

There are 20 LED illuminated buttons which provide the core navigation on a V5. Each button has a legend that indicates its default behaviour and optionally an alternative operation which may be triggered by bold press and/or enabling ALT (by pressing ALT button), e.g. OPT | ADMIN is the option menu button that will show the admin menu as its alternative function.

The [[#Touch-only|touchscreen ]] may be used to assist with navigation if desired.

== Navigation buttons ==
The navigation buttons with 2 labels can access the 2 views with short or bold press and also toggle between the 2 views with short press.

* OPT | ADMIN - Show the chain manager view or the admin menu
* MIX | LEVEL - Show the mixer or the soundcard hardware controls
* CTRL | PRESET - Show the control view or preset for the selected processor
* ZS3 | SHOT - Show the ZS3 (subsnapshot) list or the snapshot list
* Metronome - Show the tempo and transport control view or act as a tap tempo button
* PAD | STEP - Show the sequence launcher view or the MIDI pattern editor

* BACK | NO - Navigate to previous screen or cancel current operation
* SEL| YES - Navigate to selected view or select current options
* UP, DOWN, LEFT, RIGHT - Move cursor through 1D or 2D menus and grids

* ALT - Toggle alternative mode, enabling alternative functions on each button

== Transport buttons ==
By default, transport buttons operate on the global audio recorder, or the local device if a device control view is displayed. With ALT enabled, this changes to MIDI control.

* RECORD - Toggle record. Bold press to view last recording
* STOP | PANIC - Stop playback. Bold press to stop all sound.
* PLAY | PAUSE - Toggle play/pause. Bold press to view last recording.

== Function buttons ==
* F1, F2, F3, F4 are user configurable function buttons.

= Touch-only =

Touch (or pointer) interface allows full control with just a touchscreen or pointer, e.g. mouse. To reduce the space on screen wasted by dedicated navigation buttons, the touch interface uses a few less-intutive touch areas for some of its operations.

* Topbar - The left part of the black strip across the top of most views is the topbar, usually showing title info. Tap to show the chain manager view or a context menu. Bold press to toggle mixer / launcher view.
* Status area - The right part of the black strip across the top of most views is the status area, usually showing status info. Tap to show the tempo and transport control view or sometimes a context menu. Bold press to show the ZS3 list.
* Topbar back button - When appropriate, a "<" button appears on the left of the topbar. This acts as a back or cancel button. (It has short, bold and long triggers too!)
* Mixer legend strip - The bottom of each mixer / launcher strip shows the name of the chain. Tap to show the control view. Bold press to show chain manager view. Drag to horizontally scroll the mixer / launcher view.
* Lists - Many menus are longer than the viewable area. Drag or swipe to scroll a list.
* Chain manager (and similar 2D views) - drag to move the view area horizontally or vertically. Bold press and drag (don't release) an object to drag it.

Most other touch functions should seem intutive, i.e. touch something to access it.

Global functions are accessed with long press:

* Show admin menu - Topbar
* PANIC! All sounds off - Status area

= Introduction =
Zynthian has a very flexible approach to hardware design, supporting a graphical user interface (screen) with optional touch control and hardware rotary encoders and buttons. Some or all of these may be incorporated into a build. The official zynthian kits are broadly split between V5 (latest with 20 push buttons) and V4 or earlier. The user interface documentation considers three core designs:

* V4 (or earlier)
* V5
* Touch-only

The user interface is designed to fully support each of these hardware configurations, hence there are descriptions for each UI.

= Device Types =
== V4 ==

The V4 has a 3.5" resistive touchscreen and 4 rotary encoders, each with an integrated push switch. Later models also had 4 additional push buttons. The touchscreen relies on a stylus for accurate control and is not relied on for UI navigation or control.

== V5 ==

The V5 has a 5" capacative touchscreen, 4 rotary encoders, each with an integrated push switch and 20 push buttons. All operation is possible from the hardware encoders and switches. The touchscreen allows alternative method of control for some workflows.

== Touch-only ==

Zynthian may be built with just a touchscreen, or a non-touchscreen with pointer device, e.g. mouse. All functionality is available via the touch/pointer interface.

== Other control ==

It is also possible to plug in other controllers, e.g. HID keyboards, MIDI keyboards, network OSC control, etc. This pill does not cover these interfaces but it is worth noting that control can be expanded with extra hardware.

= Encoder Control =

Zynthian rotary encoders are endless rotating shafts with detents (24 on standard kit). The encoder may be rotated clockwise or counter-clockwise to increase or decrease a value. Each encoder has a switch that is operated by pressing the encoder's knob. See [[#Switch_Control|Switch Control]] section for details of switch operation.

= Switch Control =

Each switch can trigger actions and has three modes of operation:

* Short press - Press and release the switch within 0.3s
* Bold press - Press and hold the switch then release before 2.0s
* Long press - Press and hold the switch for over 2.0s

= Touch Control =

The graphical user interface allows for touch and pointer (mouse) control. This include tap / click with similar functionality to that described in the [[#Switch_Control|Switch Control]] section (short, bold, long). Gestures are also supported including drag and swipe.

Welcome to the zynthian academy, a set of short (bite-sized) tutorials that we call, "Learning Pills". Each pill is a video, audio or text that should take less than five minutes to view, listen or read and aims to deliver a very targetted piece of training about a single element of the zynthian.

Pills are designed to stand alone so you may choose which pills to consume and in which order, based on your requirements but there are some that we strongly recommend you consume early.
